Through our market security team, Willis Re attaches the highest priority to market security issues, closely monitoring the security of reinsurance markets worldwide. Willis operates a team of 30 dedicated market security professionals globally, trained in a range of disciplines, including accountancy, insurance, banking and insolvency.

While we cannot guarantee the financial strength or solvency of any market utilized, we seek to ensure, as far as we are reasonably able, that our clients' risks are placed with secure and solvent carriers.

Willis’ Market Security Department monitors each carrier in use by the Willis Group worldwide and undertakes a review of each on an at least annual basis. The review includes consideration of rating agency opinions and other market commentaries, in addition to its own independent analysis.

Reinsurance carriers would be expected to meet the following basic guidelines, although for some types of businesses, these guidelines will appropriately be much higher.

  • Minimum financial strength rating: A- (by a recognized international rating agency)
  • Minimum level of shareholders equity (or policyholders surplus): USD 100 million

When conducting individual reinsurer assessments, a more detailed research would cover considerations such as Balance sheet strength; Earnings performance; Business/Risk profile; Ownership and management; Peer benchmarks and Market indicators. Our analysis and research is then considered by Willis' independent internal Market Security Committee.

Willis Online Market Security – ‘Mosaic’

Market Security prepares reports on all reinsurers providing a detailed financial assessment, together with a written factual analysis. This and other information is shared with our associates and clients via an online information portal, ‘Mosaic’. Mosaic is a secure, customised and interactive system available to Willis clients. It is a great way of enabling Willis clients to effectively monitor their reinsurance partners from a single source.

Key features of Mosaic

  • Rating agency ratings (current and historic) and rationales
  • Market Security fact sheet
  • Key press releases
  • E-mail notification of rating agency actions and other key developments

Additional Services

We can also provide consulting services which go much further than the provision of financial and factual data outlined above. This can include discussions with analysts to provide opinion, advice and interpretation, training support, and bespoke research. Our incremental scale of services enables our clients to select the exact level of service that best suits them, knowing that service can expand as their needs do.
